More about Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a long-term condition that primarily affects women and is often misunderstood—even by healthcare professionals.

Thought to have a genetic link, lipoedema leads to a symmetrical build-up of loose connective tissue, typically in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.

Unlike regular weight gain, this loose connective tissue is painful to touch, bruises easily, and doesn’t respond to typical diet or exercise.

You may notice that symptoms worsen during times of hormonal change—such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. As the condition progresses, movement can become more difficult, leading to immobility, heavy limbs, and a feeling of pressure or discomfort.

Why Is It So Confusing?

There’s still ongoing debate about whether lipoedema is primarily a lymphatic disorder or a connective tissue dysfunction. What we know is that in later stages—especially Stage 3 or 4—excess fluid can overwhelm the lymphatic system, causing swelling and changes in tissue structure. This can result in chronic oedema, skin tightening, and additional connective tissue to  accumulate in the tissue spaces.
