Lymphoedema

More about Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a long-term condition that happens when your lymphatic system isn’t able to properly drain fluid from your body. This causes a build-up of lymph fluid in the tissues—especially fluid rich in proteins—which leads to swelling. That swelling can appear in one or more parts of the body and often feels heavy, tight, or uncomfortable.

You might notice it most commonly in your arms or legs, but it can also affect your chest, head and neck, or even the genital area. Everyone’s experience is different, and symptoms can range from mild to more pronounced.

What Causes It?

Lymphoedema can happen for several reasons. It’s often linked to cancer treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation—particularly in breast cancer, prostate/bladder cancer or general surgery procedures — where lymph nodes may be damaged or removed.

But cancer isn’t the only trigger.

Other medical conditions or life events can place extra strain on your lymphatic system:

  • Obesity, which places pressure on lymph vessels

  • Broken bones or fractures, especially near joints

  • Surgery, including joint replacements or abdominal procedures

  • Autoimmune conditions, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis

Each of these can make it harder for your body to keep lymph fluid moving the way it should.

Why Treatment Matters

When lymphoedema isn’t managed properly, it can slow down healing—especially if you have cuts, wounds, or chronic inflammation. That’s why early care is so important. With the right support, many people find relief from symptoms and improvement in mobility and comfort.

At our clinic, we understand how overwhelming this condition can feel. Our focus isn’t just on the swelling—we’re here to care for the whole person, offering support, education, and tailored therapies to help you feel more confident and in control of your health.
